- Molecular formula: Ca(OH)2, Commonly known as hydrated lime, slaked lime.
- Appearance: White powdery solid, with alkaline and slightly bitter taste, can absorb CO2 from the air and transform into calcium carbonate. When heated above 100°C, it loses water to form calcium oxide, and its aqueous solution forms a calcium carbonate film. Insoluble in water. It is strongly alkaline, with a pH value of 12.4. It has alkaline properties. Soluble in glycerin, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, and a saturated solution of sucrose, insoluble in ethanol.
- Food grade calcium hydroxide is often used as an acidity regulator (PH regulator), moderator, neutralizer, and curing agent; it can be used as a coagulant for making konjac food.
- Calcium hydroxide is widely used in the industrial field. It is a commonly used building material and can also be used in rubber and petrochemical additives. For example, it can be added to lubricating oil in the petroleum industry to prevent coking and sludge deposition. Calcium hydroxide is alkaline and can be used to reduce the acidity of the soil, thereby improving the soil structure.
